Thursday, 25 November 2021 19:45

The Niger Basin Authority (NBA) is organizing from November 18 to December 17, 2021 in Niamey (Republic of Niger) in partnership with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) through the “ Regional Partnership on Water and Environment in Central and West Africa ”(PREE), a series of   training on tools for coordinated management of dams and on hydrodynamic, ecosystem and socio-economic modelling of the Inner Niger Delta (IND).
These in-depth training courses aim to allow the experts of the Executive Secretariat of the NBA to have sufficient knowledge and mastery of the aforementioned tools with a view to (i) the operationalization of the coordinated management of dams in the Niger basin and (ii) the improvement of current and future management of the IND ecosystems .
The modules provided are :
1.Installation and use of the SIP / FEWS system;
2.Learning the water resources allocation and management model with Mike Hydro Basin and the use of the computer tool dedicated to the coordinated management of dams;
3.Learning of the IND hydrodynamic model;
4.Use of the IND ecosystem and socioeconomic model.
These trainings, provided by the French consultancy firm ISL and financed by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), involve thirteen (13) experts from the NBA and contribute to “Activity 4.3: Set up and strengthen the institutions and mechanisms for the prevention and management of conflicts related to water and transhumance at the basin and sub-basin levels” of “Result 4 : Frameworks for participation and management, dialogue and prevention and management of conflict around natural resources, are established and strengthened at the basin level and in national and regional strategies” of the IUCN Regional Water and Environment Partnership Project (PREE).
As a reminder, these training activities follow, on the one hand, the process of preparation and then adoption by the NBA Council of Ministers in November 2019 of Annex 2 to the Water Charter of the Niger Basin relating to the Water Regulations for the coordinated management of structural dams and, on the other hand, the holding in August 2021 of the first session of the waters Permanent Technical Committee (PTC) of the Niger river basin.
