CLIM’O_NB: Climate-Water Nexus: Integrated Water Resource Management in the Niger Basin Print
Thursday, 19 January 2023 14:46

The challenge: Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) in the Niger Basin can provide effective solutions for climate change adaptation and mitigation in what is one of the most impoverished and vulnerable river systems in the world. Increasing climate variability threatens agricultural production and water security in West and Central Africa.
Our approach: The International Climate Initiative (IKI) project strengthens the Niger Basin Authority and its member countries, allowing them to mainstream climate change adaptation and mitigation into regional planning, implementation and monitoring mechanisms. This is achieved through increased capacities of relevant institutions and decisionmakers, availability of successful transboundary and climate-smart IWRM solutions combined with better use and access to information and evidence-based planning tools and the availability of mechanisms for upscaling transboundary IWRM and Water - Energy - Food (WEF) NEXUS approaches that directly target climate change adaptation and mitigation. The project will focus specifically on three transboundary tributaries to the Niger river: the Sankarani, Mekrou and Benue sub-basins.
