MESSAGE FROM H. E. Mr. KOCOU ARMAND HOUANYE, THE EXECUTIVE SECRETARY OF THE NIGER BASIN AUTHORITY, ON THE OCCASION OF WORLD WATER DAY – MARCH 22, 2026

SE JME 2026 En

On this 22nd March, 2026, the international Community is celebrating World Water Day under the theme “Water, Source of Equality”, which reminds us of the recognition of Water and Sanitation as a human right, and as a factor of dignity, peace and sustainable development.

This year’s theme, while highlighting the interdependence between Water and Sanitation, as well as Gender Equality, calls for collective mobilization for  addressing the global water crisis around the Globe and in the Niger Basin in particular.

Indeed, notwithstanding the significant initiatives already undertaken and currently being implemented by the Niger Basin Authority (NBA), which contribute to reducing gender inequalities, there is still need for much effort to make of Water and Sanitation a lever for Gender Equality to advancing socio-economic development priorities in the Niger Basin.

This year’s World Water Day theme calls for a paradigm shift: It is imperative to place women, girls and other vulnerable groups at the heart of water-related solutions, while making them Actors of both Gender Equality and long-term stability. Their participation in effective water governance is essential for ensuring services that are more inclusive, more resilient and better adapted to the needs of communities.

In the light of the above, I would like to reaffirm the NBA’s commitment for an integrated, equitable and cooperative water resources management in the Niger Basin. NBA will continue to further work with its member States and partners through the implementation of large gender transformational investments to: (i) equip the Basin with Gender Equality sensitive policies and strategies; (ii) ensure the availability and access to water for multiple uses; and (iii) strengthen the resilience of the Niger Basin people and ecosystems.

I therefore call upon all stakeholders, countries, partners, civil society, private sector, and communities to join our unwavering mobilization and commitment for making Water and Sanitation a Driver for Gender Equality across all water-related sectors, with a view to building a more just, resilient, and prosperous future for the entire Niger Basin.

Together, let’s make Water a source of Equality for All.

Long live to World Water Day!

Long live to international cooperation and regional integration!

Long live to the Niger Basin Authority!

Thank you !
